Chapter 8

Gabby stepped outside, scanned the nearby area for what, she wasn’t sure—monsters, bogey men, killers? All she saw were the two trucks positioned on either end of the street containing their backup.

A van turned onto the street and drove slowly toward them.

Gabby pushed Enzo back through the door.

“Good call,” Enzo said, glancing over her shoulder at the van as it passed by the house.

The logo on the side indicated a plumbing service. “It looks legit,” she said.

Enzo’s lips set in a firm line. “Better safe than sorry. I’ll text Jake to come closer.”

Together, they waited for the van to pull into the driveway of a house at the end of the street, past where Enzo’s colleagues waited at the ready.

When a man in a logoed coverall got out and walked up to the door, Gabby let go of the breath she hadn’t known she was holding.

The plumber entered the home, and Gabby left hers.

Jake’s truck pulled up in the driveway, and he lowered his window. “What did the package contain?”

Gabby dug in her pocket for the disk. Before she handed it to Jake, she looked all around, making sure no one was watching. Leaning into his window, she slid the disk into his hand. She didn’t let go until she met his gaze with a direct one of her own. “My son’s life depends on me delivering that disk to his kidnappers.”

Jake nodded and tucked the disk in his pocket. “Understood. I’ll get it back to you ASAP.” He turned to Enzo. “I have Swede running a background check on Alexa and Bernard Schram. He should have something back soon.”

His cellphone rang where it rested on the console. He glanced down and grinned. “Speak of the devil.” Jake answered the call and placed the device on speaker. “Yo, Swede. You’re on speaker.”

“Do you have Ramos and Ms. Ryan with you?”

“They’re here,” Jake replied.

“Bernard Schram has a clean background check. The man has a Top Secret clearance, typical of an officer in Space Command. No surprises there. But we did find something interesting and worth checking out.”

Gabby leaned forward, hoping for anything that would help find the kidnapper and bring Jamie home.

Swede continued. “Alexa Schram, aka Alexa Haines before she married Colonel Schram, shows her prior address as an upscale townhome in the coveted Colorado Springs neighborhood of Broadmoor, where she lived for two years prior to marrying Schram.”

“So?” Gabby said, impatient for Swede to get to the interesting part.

“And that’s it,” he said.

“What do you mean by, that’s it?” Enzo asked.

“Beyond living at the Broadmoor for two years, there’s nothing else associated with Alexa Haines. No prior address anywhere online or in any DMV databases for any state.”

“Did you run a check on her social security number?”

“We did. It’s strangely clean as well. Almost too clean. Tax records show she worked as an interior designer for a company in Colorado for the two years she lived at the Broadmoor. Before that…nothing.”

“Is she an immigrant? A naturalized citizen?” Max asked from the passenger seat of Jake’s truck.
